CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE

CKD

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a long-term condition that occurs when the kidneys are damaged and can't filter blood properly. This damage can cause waste to build up in the body, which can lead to other health problems.

CKD can be caused by a number of conditions in the body like :

Diabetes

High blood pressure

Autoimmune disorders

Birth defects of the kidneys

Toxic chemicals

Kidney stones and infection

Pain Medicines

Symptoms of CKD include:

Changes in urination

Swelling

Fatigue

Skin rash/itching

Metallic taste in mouth/ammonia breath

Nausea and vomiting

Shortness of breath

Feeling cold

Dizziness and trouble concentrating

Diagnosis & Treatment

If you experience any of the symptoms above then you should consult a physician if a nephrologist is not available near you. The doctor will take detailed history, check the symptoms and advise you some blood and urine tests like - CBC, KFT, LFT, Serum Electrolytes and Urine Routine. Once the results for these tests are available some further imaging tests like Ultrasound KUB, CT Urography or MRI may be required.

Once all the test results are available, your doctor would be able to know how much your kidneys are functioning. The kidney disease is classified into 5 stages. In stage 1 the kidney is functioning at 90% and in stage 5 the kidney function is less than 15%. In early stages of kidney disease the treatment is done mostly through medications to treat the underlying causes like diabetes and hypertension. Lifestyle modifications like regular exercise, avoiding alcohol and tobacco, eating lots of fruits and raw vegetables help in improving the kidney health. In stage 5 which is also called end stage renal disease, dialysis or kidney transplant may be the only options left. It is therefore important to consult a nephrologist at an early stage of kidney disease. For other people it is important to get their kidney health checked every year through a health checkup which should include kidney function test.
