An arteriovenous (AV) fistula is a surgical connection created between an artery and a vein. This is mostly done in the arm to provide access for hemodialysis treatment. This procedure is essential for patients with kidney failure who require regular dialysis.
The AV fistula allows for efficient blood flow during hemodialysis by enlarging and strengthening the vein over time. This makes it suitable for repeated needle insertions. If dialysis is done through a normal vein then there would be more frequent infection through the access site.
