Brain Stroke is a condition in which the blood supply to some part of the brain is stopped either due to a blockage in the blood vessel or rupture of the blood vessel. When blood supply to some part of the brain is stopped then the functions ccntrolled by that part of the brain are impaired. The most common symptoms experienced by the patient are slurring of the voice, jaw appears to be jammed, mouth shape is distorted, saliva starts coming out, there is weakening of one side of the body. The most important symptom which differentiates a stroke from a heart attack is that there is weakening on only one side of the body which means paralysis of one side of the face, one arm or one leg.
Kidney failure or chronic kidney disease is a potent risk factor for stroke which is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The risk of stroke is 5–30 times higher in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) especially for patients who are on dialysis. This also prevents the flow of blood to the brain and causes stroke.
The underlying cause of a brain stroke is high blood pressure also called hypertension. The diagnosis for such patients start at home by recording their blood pressure 4 times a day which gives a trend to the doctor to understand at what time of the day the person is having increase in blood pressure which is also the time when patient is having higher chance of having a brain stroke. Apart from blood pressure monitoring patient having kidney disease need to get their carotid doppler test done atleast once in 6 months to ensure that there is no blockage in the carotid artery. Carotid artery is the main artery that carries blood to the brain. If patient has slight symptoms of stroke like slurred speech, jaw appears to be jammed, mouth shape is distorted, saliva starts coming out, there is weakening of one side of the body then patient needs to be rushed to the hospital immediately where the stroke can be reversed. In certain cases patient can have symptoms for a short span of time and then go away that is called TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack). It should not be ignored a MRI of brain with Stroke Protocol needs to be done.
