SLED (Sustained Low Efficiency Dialysis) is a modified form of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) used to provide slow and continuous dialysis for critically ill patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) or other kidney-related complications. SLED combines elements of intermittent hemodialysis and continuous renal replacement therapy. It offers precise and gentle removal of waste products alongwith excess fluid from the bloodstream over an extended period.
During SLED blood is slowly circulated through a dialysis machine equipped with a special filter that allows for gradual and continuous removal of toxins and fluid. The treatment duration typically ranges from 8 to 12 hours per session. It gives a more gentle and hemodynamically stable approach compared to traditional intermittent hemodialysis.
SLED is particularly beneficial for hemodynamically unstable patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) who require renal replacement therapy but may not tolerate conventional hemodialysis due to cardiovascular instability or fluid shifts. The slow and steady nature of SLED helps minimize fluctuations in blood pressure and electrolyte levels, reducing the risk of hemodynamic compromise.
